FLINT, MI --Twelve people have been nominated for Resource Genesee’s annual Sybyl Award, an honor that seeks to recognize an individual who demonstrates an extraordinary sense of community and dedication to helping others.
The award, sponsored by ELGA Credit Union and HealthPlus, is named after Sybyl M. Atwood, who for more than 40 years was the program director for Volunteer and Information Services at Resource Genesee and its predecessor organizations.
Atwood was known as the area’s “grande dame” of charity work and helped thousands of local people in need before her death in 2007. Mentoring was central to her work, and she is remembered by many for her can-do, no-excuses approach to helping others.
Now a selection committee is faced with the task of choosing a person who exemplifies those qualities.
The recipient will be named at a luncheon December 8, from 11:30 – 1:30 p.m. at the Riverfront Banquet Center in downtown Flint.
All twelve nominees will also be honored at the event. The nominees are Lois Cunningham from Hurley Medical Center, Kenneth Foyder from the Weiss Advocacy Center, Arminda Garcia from the Genesee County Hispanic/Latino Collaborative, Almeda Hunter from the Flint Institute of Music, Nate Jonker from the Clio Healthy Community Initiative, James Miller from Hurley Medical Center, Sharon Sawyers from Hurley Medical Center, Joseph A. Taylor from the Genesee County Tax Coalition, Charles P. Tommasulo from the Family Service Agency Of Mid-Michigan, Vivian VanNorwick from the Legal Services of Eastern Michigan, Marjorie B. Wentworth from McLaren Regional Medical Center, and David White from Kettering University.
Also sponsoring the event are Baker College of Flint, Community Foundation of Greater Flint, The Disability Network, Family Service Agency of Mid-Michigan, Friends of Kenyetta Dotson, Genesee County Committee for Community Peace, Genesee County Community Mental Health, Genesys Health System, McLaren Regional Medical Center, Mott Community College-President’s Office, Mott Community College-The Office of Professional and Development and Experiential Learning, and Sybyl’s Friends.
